One of the classic, year-round available cut greens is Aspidistra.
Aspidistra is a widely used cutting green. Aspidistra is very popular for the width and firmness of its leaves. Despite the sturdiness of the leaf, it is still quite pliable. Therefore, the leaf is also widely used bent and folded in floral arrangements. An additional advantage of the Aspidistra leaf is that it has a long shelf life. This makes the cut green a sought-after product by florists.
Aspidistra leaf is imported weekly from both the Americas and Southern Europe. At all suppliers, the leaf grows cultivated. That is, the product is planted in nurseries and picked there. The product does not come from the wild. There are areas where the Aspidistra plant grows wild, but this is deep in the forests. Aspidistra is, in fact, a shade plant. This becomes a complicated job to pick. Hence, cultivated growing of the leaves is a nice outcome.
To protect the leaf from the hot sun, the leaf grows under black nets at the supplier. The leaf is picked by hand by the workers on the plantations. During picking, the leaf is immediately sorted by length. This ensures that we can offer the leaf by length. After sorting, the leaf is cleaned and packed. Ready to come our way.
The leaf comes in different lengths. Besides the well-known dark green variety, there are also variegated varieties. For example Aspidistra Variegated, with white stripes and Aspidistra Milky way, with white speckles. Since this year, our supplier also offers the leaf folded like a rose. All in all, plenty of choice!
As we told you before, the leaf is also widely used curved in floral arrangements. So we see the Aspidistra leaf regularly as the outer edge of a bouquet. But also upright in a bouquet, or the rose variety we see a lot.
Actually, the possibilities with Aspidistra are endless.
